The National Park Service has been undertaking efforts to revegetate active construction areas of the Petrified National Forest with native plants. To achieve this, the Service has hired Fred Phillips Consulting to perform invasive plant removal and native seed harvesting onsite.
The new construction is an effort to alleviate the flash flooding that occurs in the Petrified Forest during the rainy season. The construction has disturbed parts of the park and left it susceptible to invasive, exotic plants. Seed collected on the park proves the most advantageous; these plants are already adapted to the extremely hot conditions of the park and have the best chance of survival, even over seeds sourced externally.
